I hated beer until I was 22, then I grew up. My first real beer was Abita TurboDog at Igor's Tavern in New Orleans and I've never been the same. 20 years later I've run the gamut and have settled comfortably with Bocks and Lagers. As I listed in my profile, my other two favorites are Yuengling and Kokanee. Yuengling and TurboDog are not available in MT, so I go for a Cold Smoke normally, but for all day drinking I do like Kokanee. Yes it's a light beer, but it's inexpensive and crisp and good for hydration. Lately I have been enjoying Belgian Whites as well, since there is a lack of Cream Ales in this area. Looking forward to some good discussions.

Welcome to the site.

Have you tried any beers from Bayern or Big Sky? Those are 2 pretty good brewers from Montana.

Its good to have the ability to find a cheap utility beer to keep the wallet and the beer gut happy. Mine is Busch Light. I won't lie, it is hard to admit that here. Embarrassed

Cream ales are hard to find everywhere since it is a style that is rarely produced.

From what I have read, you definitely gravitate toward the lighter side of beer. Now, start experimenting with the darker side. Don't worry, its not dark as in evil. If you have done this, try again, and again, and again until it takes. I look back and can't believe that I used to hate stouts and Belgian beers. Blows my mind.

Yup, my story is about the same although I don't exactly remember which beer triggered "the change", but I do love the Black Butte Porter and had some last night.

Sloshed,

I have had a number of Bayerns and Big Skys, especially the Slow Elk and Scapegoat. I went through the darks and had a stormy affair with Porters for a year until I fell down the stairwell outside of the Rhino. I forget about "alcohol content/volume" when I dance with dark beer, but I was putting a dent in my Around the World In 40 Beers card at the time. If you get to Missoula much you should try the Rhino if you haven't already. 50 on tap including the standard domestics. I'll be watching the NCAA tourney this weekend and may have to hit the rhino and come back with a few reviews.

My personal favorite from Montana is Big Sky Moose Drool. That's an excellent brown ale.

Keep in mind that "dark" doesn't necessarily mean high alcohol. For example, Porters, Stouts, and Brown Ales tend to run in the 4.5-6% range which is on par with 4-5% lighter beers. Of course, imperial stouts, baltic porters, etc. are another story. Drink From Flask

And don't forget, your good ol' KBS (Kentucky Bourbon Stout). How come no one else had this one yet?
