"The beer that made Milwaukee famous hopes to stage a comeback by returning to a brewing formula discarded over 30 years ago.

Schlitz had been available only in cans for several years until the brand's owner, Pabst Brewing Co., began selling it in bottles last year in Minneapolis and Tampa, Fla.

That bottled version of Schlitz, which uses a traditional recipe last used in the early '70s, was snapped up by older baby boomers who remember the beer from its glory days, before Jos. Schlitz Brewing Co. cheapened the formula. On Monday, 10 Chicago taverns and liquor stores began carrying the bottled version."

I finally tried this older version of "The Beer That Made Milwaukee Famous" and it is indeed far superior to the newer recipe. I guess we need a new entry into the database for "classic" Schlitz.

Usually, most new formulas aren't as good as the old ones they replace. New Coke, albeit non-alcoholic is a perfect example. The thing here is, why did Schlitz wait so long to realize the new formula sucked? I'll probably pass if I see it, unless it's on sale...

Unfortunately for Schlitz, I think the damage is done and they will have a hard time convincing consumers to try their new/old product unless they put a lot of money into ad campaigns.

Schlitz is one those brands that will always have a small following, especilly locally to it's own area. Like Iron City, PBR, Yeungling, and a few others. Not bad beers, but still not a nationally known name. The big 3 took care of that years ago..
