A company in Sweden has introduced a new light beer made of oats instead of barley. The enzymes in the beer are said to lower cholesterol, although, testing is going on right now. The beer which will probably be called "Swedish Opera" in the U.S. contains 3.9 carbs and only 63 calories. I think it is pretty safe to say that it will taste like crap.

Oats instead of barley? And they still call it beer? OK, call me old fashioned, but I thought barley was one of the main four ingredients that made beer, well, beer.
And yes, it will definitely taste like crap. _________________ kidvelvet

Doesn't beer require barley? That's like a "garden-burger"!!! If there is no beef, it's not a burger damnit! If there's no barley, it's not beer. It's Oat Beer, which which won't sell here in the US. Might be competition for Crapweiser new fruity beer. _________________ .

Oats? That is weird... At least it's made out of cereal. Unlike many other beers made with korn syrup, rice or wood!
Here are some alternative cereals used in beer that I have tasted and that are simply marvelous:
Hemp
Now that is good. Especially if it is roasted. It will give good malt-caramel with burned flavor to the beer. Good examples of this are the Chanvre Rousse from Le Chaudron and the Folle Du Roi from Les Mousquetaires.
Really good stuff!

Buckwheat
Although this might sound odd, it is actually very good. Rogue used to have an excellent Buckwheat ale just as RJ who has an Ambrée De Sarrasin (buckwheat amber beer). The buckwheat give a special aroma to the beer. Very impressive.

Rice
Generally, rice ales aren't that good. But since they are so common now, there are a couple of good specimens. Rice is often found in buckwheat ales because the combination of both can make a beer without gluten (good for people allergic). The Messagère (messenger) is an example of a beer designed for people with allergies.

I won't even talk about korn and wood. They are used by macros to speed up fermentation and they generally don't help the beers taste... _________________ Prime Minister: Beer Snob |

Oh! I forgot to say that in my opinion, a good beer should follow the Reinheitsgebot (german purity law for beer). _________________ Prime Minister: Beer Snob |

Hemp beer? Wow, I must be getting old!
If I drank one of those, I would probably fall asleep in about 15 minutes. _________________ kidvelvet

Don't worry. This stuff is inoffensive. Hemp is used in lots of things. Rope, clothes, beer, ect.
Although I don't know much about this stuff, I believe it will only get you if you smoke it. _________________ Prime Minister: Beer Snob |

Hemp will not get you high, ever. Marijuana, which is different will get you the effect. I'm not an expert either, but I learned that in Amsterdam. _________________ .

Yes, hemp is mostly made of the root and stem material, while the THC is in the flowers, buds, and leaves. _________________ .
