Hey all!

I recently turned 21 (legal drinking age in America) and was looking for a place to help my friends and I find good beer. We all drink on Friday nights and always try a new beer, being that we are the adventureus type and that we have super store devoted to beer and booze nearby. Although we have our favorites, we still enjoy trying something new.

Welcome! To be completly honest, I hope your favorite beers change once you start discovering better brews. MGD is such a nasty ass beer, and the same for that Amber Bock crap! Have you had a Sam Adams before? Now that's a great beer! Although, right now, I'm enjoying more Belgian beers than American, it's still my fallback....cheers! Drink Beer Bottle

I actually enjoy MDG... I have only had Sam Adams Boston Lager and it was total crap. I was gonna try a different brew of Sam but none of us have built up the trust to drink Sam again, even if it is a differnt brew.

We did find a Micro Brew from Chyahoga Falls, WI by Leininkugle's Apple Havest I think it is called. And it so far is the best beer we've had... it runs about 8% and tastes like fermented apple cider with a slight taste of normal beer flavor. But this much we found out... I tastes just as good burping it as it did going down. I highly recomend it. And when I can find out exactly what it is called I will be posting.

And as for Amber Bock well... we were pretty good and drunk when we started drinking it after about 3 Guinness Drafts each plus at least 2 MDG's and maybe even more... I can't remember... I do know that no matter how drunk you are... Steel Reserve still tastes like Pittsburg Piss-water.

Well, for total crap, it's certainly respected, and awarded quite highly. Beer should have a good strong flavor, like Boston Lager. I know it is a bit heavy for some, but you should try some of the others as well. I'm obviously a bit partial to the beer that's made 30 minutes from my house and all, but it's still a great brew. I can't imagine what you would think of some the West coast beers, which are heavy in hops by nature..... Drink Beer Bottle

Pretty much anything by Great Lakes is good. Barrelhouse Brewing is a relatively new Cincinnati brewer that makes pretty decent beer. I've also recently discovered Mt. Carmel Brewing. Their Copper Ale is pretty tasty and comes in a big ass 64oz bottle that gives you the Wow! factor at parties.

What part of Cincinnati are you in? I used to live in Clifton.

To tell the truth ricka182, the Sam Adams Boston Lager we did have was several months old and it had been in and out of refridgeration durring a warm summer. I am not sure if that affected it or not.

That most certainly would have impacted the taste. I would at least give them a chance again. It is a strong brew for people who haven't tried it. I didn't like it the first time, but over time, it's become one of my favorites. Especially seeing as you live in Cinci, there is a massive SA brewery right there, so I'm sure the product you get is just as fresh as what I get. Drink Beer Bottle

I would recommend you try Sam Adams again. I to had a similar expierence with Samuel Adams beers. I worked for Red Lobster and they have the lager on tap and I didnt like it. But I guess my beer taste changed..I have yet to try the lager again but I am sure that I would like it.

I have had 11 varieties of Sam Adams and havent found one yet that I didnt like. They in my opinion are the best and everything else is playing catch up trying to be like Sam Adams.

Dont get me wrong though there are some very good microbrews out there. You should try to find anything made by Oakenbarell Brewing company. They are based in Greenwood, Indiana. They have some good ones. That and the Anchor Brewing Company they are a small operation that is privately owned. The owner refuses to sell out to BIG BEER. So he has complete control of the quality of beer produced.

Alright, I've got to chime in about this Sam Adams discussion and I am sure that the Boston twins are going to kick my ass for these comments...

Let me start by saying that I have only tried 5 or 6 beers by Sam Adams, but judging from those and the image that the company conveys, they seem to be half-way point between macrobrewers and real craft brewers. I think they make a good stepping stone for those getting interested in craft beer and an entry point to learning about some of the styles that are out there..

I think as you continue to try more beers, you might find that Sam Adams beers are somewhat mediocre - often true to style, but average in taste. I attribute this mainly to the fact that they are mass-producing their beer and really are trying to compete with Bud, Miller, Coors, etc.. True craft brewers can't possibly compete with those big companies.. They tend to compete against themselves and strive to make the best beer that they can.

We have TV commercials for their beers here (you probably have them too) where Jim Koch says that they are crazy for adding a pound of hops to each batch. That is nothing.. If you have never had beers from the west coast, they hop the hell out of them... It is an acquired taste, but the beers are certainly more complex and loaded with flavor. If you wish to try something along those lines, pick up some beers from Dogfish Head (From Delaware). They are west coast style and some of the better beers brewed in the country..

Having said all of that, I mean no disrespect to Jim Koch or Samuel Adams.. They have done a great job at opening many doors to people who are not familiar with the vast world of beer out there.. Just keep in mind that there are over 2,000 brewers in the USA alone and many thousands more in the world.. So much good beer, so little time... Beer

I would say Sam Adams is probably the biggest of the craft brewers; and over the years, they have outgrown competing against any others. Although, nowadays, there are so many new craft brewers out there, it provides new avenues of competition. With their growth, they can actually compete against the big three. At first, I was all SA, and I still am to a point. But I wouldn't say a beer style they make is better just because they make it. For instance, I used to swear by their White ale, and now I prefer Victory Whirlwind 1000x more. I think J is right they are halfway between, but that comes with growth over time. As for the hops comparison, that is good evidence they are going after the big three, as I can vouch for the high hops in West coast beer. It's also about local taste. Pretty much, all the beers over here, SA or not, don't have as much hops as Westies. Either way, SA has won many medals and awards, and will continue to do so I believe....either way, I think we can all consider SA, as well as most of the smaller crafters a true beer, and all true beer is great. The big three are pretty much all crap, especially AB, aka horsepiss central.....

And for the record, BU and I are not really twins.....but we do enjoy beating the crap out of each other, and especially his brother Mary... Drink Beer Bottle

I have always considered SA to be one of those beers that you are thankful for when you go to a bar and they have the usual macrobrew trifecta. When I was in Atlanta last year, I breathed a sigh of relief if they offered SA on tap.

However, I don't think I would go out of my way to buy one while I am here in Portland. Too many other choices.
