Shares of Anheuser-Busch hit an all-time on Friday on reports that Europe's InBev SA was working on a $46 billion bid for the St. Louis-based brewer. Anheuser-Busch shares rose 7.7 percent, or $4.03, to close at $56.61, after reaching as high as $58 earlier in the day.

The share surge followed a report on the Financial Times Web site that InBev, the world's biggest brewer by volume, may directly approach Anheuser chief executive August Busch IV. Anheuser-Busch declined comment, and messages left with InBev were not returned.

Full story.

I hate AB. I would hate them even more so if they sold out to Inbev. Regardless of my dislike for most of the beer they make, they are still, and have been for a very long time, an American icon. An image of tradition, history, resilience and steadfastness. Apparently, they may not be so solid. There are really only three big brewer in this country. If this buy out happens; regardless of where the product is made, the message is clear. AB will be another foreign company on American soil....

Just FYI.. One of our big 3 breweries sold out a long time ago.. SABMiller.. The SAB is for South African Breweries. Actually, Molson Coors is half Canadian now.. Confused

I read about this on Yahoo Finance. The article focused more on the town and how St. Louis would suffer. Apparently InBev is known for cutting to the bone with their breweries, which not only means layoffs, but it would also mean less community support from the brewer to the citizens of St. Louis.

Could you imagin what would happen if they bought out Iron City Beer? Pittsburgh would riot.

I thought of those points, after I posted. I think AB is more of an icon than the other two....I guess I'll just have to keep making my own, and enjoying a fresh Sam Adams when I can.....

Yeah.. I am ashamed when I break down and by BMC products, but the fact of the matter is that if you are a heavy drinker, you have to drink some of their stuff or you will end up weighing 400lbs.. I wish I could only drink microbrews, but the calories are killer..

Well, I suppose this is very good news to the next prez of the USA , John McCain, whose wife, Cindy Hensley McCain, is Chairman and principle stockholder of one of the largest AB distributorships in the USA, Hensley & Co.

Well, as expected AB rejected the offer. They will work for a better future plan to keep them independent and American.

Of course, InBev has now said they will try again, and expect to be successful on the acquisition. They have said they will even go to the shareholders for a vote, similar to the yahoo-Microsoft merger that was in the news recently....personally, I think the best defense against this teh government stepping in and stopping a monopoly from forming, even if it's owned by a foreign company. Clearly, even as a non AB supporter usually, this is bad for America, and bad for the industry.....but will still happen probably...just like everything else in America, we're going to just give it away to the rest of the world, regardless of compensation. There is no longer any true American corporate spirit...... Drink Beer Bottle

Well, it seems all about done now.......latest news is InBev has raised the offer to $70 a share......and the AB Board members are poised to accept the deal as early this weekend.

I hope the politicians of Missouri stand up and fight this. It would create such a monopoly, and regardless of what they say now, IB will do whatver they want when it's all theirs.......

Confirmed. As of late last night, the AB board agreed to SELL-OUT.....IB claims the jobs won't be lost, and St. Louis will remain a corporate office, but you know not all of what they say is true......at least it was bought by a Belgian company....they should know how to make beer, maybe a better budweiser.....I don't care though, because most of their stuff sucks already anyway.......

Yup.. its a done deal..

Wow.. InBev is a monster of a company now (if they weren't before).. I guess the only positive thing I can say is that In-Bev at least has a couple of decent beers, while AB - not so much other than my crappy Busch Light.. Embarrassed

I certainly hope they don't lose any jobs - this economy is already about to tank BIG TIME...

This just goes hand in hand with being part of a global market. Foreign companies are going to continue to buy more American assets as long as the dollar continues to weaken. And the only thing that the dollar is tied to right now is oil, which hasn't helped things much.

I am beginning to really enjoy my foreign index funds more and more nowdays...
