I just found an interesting bit of info about the connection between St.Bernardus beers and Westvleteren at the new link for Beerinfo posted in the beer links section under the title: Belgian Trappist beers nearly religious experience.http://www.insidebayarea.com/ci_5853132?source=rss

I've heard that before. In addition, since the deal with St. Bernardus ended, Westvletern is brewed using yeast from Westmalle. This is interesting for anyone trying to homebrew a Westvletern clone since both Wyeast #3787 and White Labs WLP530 are reported to be the same strain of yeast.

I'd be interested in hearing from people who have tried both St.B's and Westvleteren what the comparison in taste is.I haven't had the "religious experience" yet, of the W,but the St.B's was pretty great! Drink Beer Bottle

I would say that the two are pretty damn close. The Westy is a bit more creamy and complex than the St. B when poured at the right temperature, but the St. B is probably the closest taste to the Westy of all the beers. I would say that I prefer the St. B over many other traditional trappist beers, and only a couple of quads would I say are better (achel, westy).

I don't really like the St. B tripel, and I would prefer either westmalle or rochefort in that variety.

However, the price point of the Westy makes the achel and St. B varieties a MUCH better value.

I've had both, and I'd have to agree, they are pretty close. The W12 is a bit better though, maybe that's because it is so hard to get....either way, there both great beers....

Now, that I finally got to try the Holy Grail of beer,I can compare my previous favorite beer,ST.B 12,with my new fave,Westvleteren 12.I can make the comparison between a really good Fender guitar copy and an authentic USA Stratocaster or maybe a good Japanese COPY of a Harley Davidson motorcycle vs. the real Milwaukee Iron.Sure, the copy can be fun and good for most occasions, but there is nothing like the REAL thing BABY! OhhhhhhHHHH - YeeeeeeeaaaaaahhhhhhHHH!!!!!!!!!!
