According to an article published by the BBC News, there is a growing backlash against student drinking in the U.S. and universities are going "dry".
The University of Oklahoma is the latest university to go dry in an attempt to thwart binge drinking. Many believe such attempts are not working and have been driving drinking and parties into residential neighborhoods.
It seems apparent to me that these schools are just trying to cover their asses from lawsuits. Anyone with half a brain knows that kids are going to drink. And why not? That is half of what makes college some of the best days of a person's life. It is unfortunate that sometimes kids die from it, but that would still happen even if there were no universities. And it will still happen even if they all go dry.

Well, I applaud their efforts. I think Universities are the jumping off point for millions of America's alcoholics....and since I graduated (10 years ago) things don't seem to be better. We NEVER pressured a 21-Year-Old to drink 21 shots on his birthday. Shit, that's suicide. Now it seems to be the standard. I know that probably only 1-5% of 21-year-olds CAN drink 21 drinks without ending up in the hospital, but I am sure if you asked most college students they would guess that number to be much higher. I may be in the minority here, but Universities have a responsibility to their students. Whatever they can do to help EDUCATE them about drinking is noble, but sometimes you have to wipe your hands of it and say "No more drinking here!". It may not prevent people from drinking, but it will make it harder for those that are too young. _________________ It's Beer-Thirty somewhere.

I'm shocked and appalled. Rebuttal time baby..

Well WE didn't, but it doesn't mean that others weren't doing that, or something similar. On my 21er, I only did 14 shots, but that was in 90 minutes. If I had made a night of it, that probably would have happened. Oh, and I was nowhere near a college at the time. Or how about the time I had 28 drinks and wound up in the hospital with a cracked open head. That was in the privacy of my own house and had nothing to do with the school.
Do you think the beer garden at UofO should be shut down?
I would be very surprised if any of the changes that these schools are making will have any effect other than the location of the drinking. Nearly every underage college student has access to someone that is 21 and willing to buy for them, so the drinking will continue. People are still going to host keg parties. It just means that all of the fraternity peeps are going to wind up going to non-fraternity parties and these parties will be even bigger than they would have been otherwise.
I drank all the way through college which is probably why it was so much damn fun. If I had waited until I was 21, it would have been a pretty boring experience by comparison.
I think we all know what happens when prohibition is in effect. I think if you want to reduce harmful underage drinking, then lower the drinking age and take away the mystique and feelings of rebellion associated with it. Do people drink themselves to death at European and Japanese universities (I don't know)? |

I've always believed the drinking age should be 18. If you can make important choices like joining the military or casting a voter for our country's leaders, then you should goddam well be able to crack a cold one without worrying about getting an MIP! _________________ No time is wasted when you're wasted all the time. |

| I'm proud to say that I went to one of the few universities that still sells beer at sporting events (U. of Cincinnati). I think the big point here is that the "backlash" is coming from the universities, NOT the students (who are the ones actually doing the drinking). Jason is right, all this does is make kids drink at their friends apartments instead. |

One of the leading university in Montreal recently moved into a new building. It's a former Molson building and was sold for 1$ !!!!
Oh yeah, there was one condition to that contract...
That Molson would have the exclusive rights to any kind of beer reselling in the campus for 100year.
I guess that takes care of such worries! _________________ Prime Minister: Beer Snob |

I have never heard of such a thing..That is awesome! We could tailgate in the parking lot, but would have to sneak a flask in if we wanted to drink during the game.

| Up until they demolished the student union to build a new one, you could buy beer at one of the restaurants on campus. There is absolutely nothing that compares to drinking a few pitchers with your buddies right before Calculus. |

I remember that when the drinking age was 18 at CU Boulder, we could drink in the stands (I don't know if they have changed that or not...it was that way in 89 when I left.) Also, the dorms allowed you to have in your room anything that you were legal to consume (I made sure that my roommate was over 21.
This is clearly a CYA move by Universities...but I can't blame them. If they take the line "We don't allow that here" then overlitigious parents have no way to get to the school if something happens (at least it becomes difficult.) While kids will drink during that time period, the University has every right to say "not here." Quite frankly, it just means stepping off campus to drink...which really doesn't require someone to go that far anyway.
I don't think universities have any "moral imperative" to keep kids from drinking...and going after a university for someone drinking simply because they are a student is wrong. But that doesn't mean they don't have the right. _________________ kidvelvet
